Description
With an origin in Central American and Caribbean islands, the avocado (persea Americana) is a staple diet in many fruit-loving cultures around the world. Ethiopia avocados began in earnest in the year 1979. Before that period, the currently famous southwestern-producing belt did not have farmers of the fruit nor the clients. The first governmental orchards in the area spread rapidly after 1979 to new areas, including Tepi and Gera in this bypass of the Great Rift Valley. To date, the avocado commands 75 percent of the total fruit acreage in the area.
